Seoul: Lisa Su, the head of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), is anticipated to visit South Korea next week to engage with key local conglomerate executives, industry sources revealed on Wednesday. The CEO of the U.S. chip giant is expected to arrive in South Korea next Wednesday, marking her first visit to the nation since assuming her role in 2014.

According to Yonhap News Agency, during her visit, Su is expected to meet with Choi Soo-yeon, CEO of Naver, the country's largest local portal operator. A meeting with Lee Jae-yong, the head of Samsung Electronics Co., is also considered highly probable. This visit by the AMD chief coincides with the U.S. chipmaker's ongoing efforts to challenge NVIDIA Corp.'s dominance in the artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors market. AMD has been securing major partnerships with significant tech firms such as OpenAI and Meta Platforms Inc.

Industry analysts anticipate that Su will discuss with Samsung's Lee the potential expansion of the supply of high bandwidth memory (HBM), an essential component in AI accelerators. Samsung has long been a supply partner of AMD for HBM. In a recent development, Samsung announced it has commenced mass production of HBM4s, marking the first global shipment of this advanced chip for AI accelerators.

Additionally, discussions with Naver may focus on data center businesses. As Naver aims to develop a "sovereign" AI, it would require a semiconductor supply from the U.S. chip giant, according to market watchers. This strategic visit underscores AMD's commitment to strengthening its foothold in the AI semiconductor market through collaborations with significant South Korean enterprises.
