Seoul: President Yoon Suk Yeol is under mounting pressure from South Korea's main opposition party to face impeachment or treason charges following his brief and controversial attempt to impose martial law, which was swiftly blocked by the National Assembly. According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon's unexpected declaration of "emergency" martial law on Tuesday night was prompted by his accusations that opposition parties were disrupting governmental functions by pushing to impeach officials and reduce next year's budget. The declaration, which marked the first instance of martial law since South Korea's current democratic system was established in 1987, sent shockwaves across the nation. Martial law troops entered the National Assembly compound, an action that was revoked early Wednesday morning after an overwhelming 190-0 vote by the National Assembly rejected the decree. Notably, some lawmakers from Yoon's own People Power Party (PPP) joined the opposition in the vote against the martial law, which lasted only about six hours. Yoon's actions have plunged South Korea into political disarray and jeopardized his political future, with opposition lawmakers openly calling for his removal from office. The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) announced plans to file treason charges against Yoon and his defense and interior ministers, as well as to pursue impeachment proceedings to hold them accountable for their actions. Following Yoon's late-night television announcement, approximately 280 martial law troops entered the National Assembly, and police officers blocked its entrance, as reported by the parliament's secretary-general. DP leader Lee Jae-myung condemned the martial law declaration as "illegal" and declared that Yoon is "no longer the president" of South Korea. The parliament is required to vote on whether to proceed with impeachment within 72 hours after the motion is reported to the plenary session, necessitating a two-thirds majority in the 300-member parliament to pass. The DP and other small opposi tion parties collectively hold 192 seats, implying that at least eight out of the 108 PPP lawmakers must support the impeachment for it to succeed. If the impeachment is successful, the Constitutional Court will decide whether Yoon's removal from office is justified, during which time the president's constitutional powers would be suspended, and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo would assume presidential responsibilities. Despite some PPP lawmakers voting against Yoon's martial law declaration, it remains uncertain whether they will align with opposition parties in supporting his impeachment. Han Dong-hoon, chief of the ruling PPP, mentioned that while PPP lawmakers largely agreed on dissolving the Cabinet and dismissing the defense chief, they were divided over whether to urge Yoon to leave the party. Yoon, who narrowly defeated DP leader Lee Jae-myung in the May 2022 election, has faced continuous challenges from opposition parties and internal divisions within his conservative party, further exacerbated by con troversies involving First Lady Kim Keon Hee. His abrupt martial law declaration has not only triggered political turmoil domestically but also alarmed international allies, including the United States, which welcomed Yoon's decision to revoke the martial law decree. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed that the United States continues to expect political disagreements in South Korea to be resolved peacefully and in accordance with the rule of law. Concerns are growing over potential leadership gaps amid increasing security and economic challenges anticipated with former U.S. President Donald Trump's return to the White House next month. Yoon had planned to meet Trump soon after his inauguration on January 20. Adding to the tension, the DP also intends to hold a revote next week on a special counsel bill targeting the first lady's corruption and election interference allegations. The bill, which Yoon vetoed for the third time, requires a two-thirds majority to override the veto.
