USFK Commander Emphasizes Capabilities Over Troop Numbers Amid Speculation

Washington: The top U.S. general in South Korea emphasized his focus on "strictly on capabilities over numbers," as speculation continues about a potential reduction in American troops stationed on the Korean Peninsula. This statement comes amidst discussions of a possible adjustment in military posture by Washington.

According to Yonhap News Agency, U.S. Forces Korea Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson made these remarks during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing in Washington. His comments align with ongoing efforts by South Korea and the United States to "modernize" their bilateral alliance in response to the changing regional security landscape.

"Our forces in Korea are modernizing to address rapidly evolving strategic dilemmas. That's why my focus remains strictly on capabilities over numbers," Gen. Brunson stated. He further explained the importance of maintaining a focus on the specific capabilities necessary on the peninsula, highlighting a strategic shift from capacity to capability as crucial in understanding the evolving security environment.
