Seoul: The unification minister emphasized on Thursday that the alliance between South Korea and the United States will continue to be strong under the U.S. administration of President-elect Donald Trump, alongside a steady trilateral partnership involving Japan. According to Yonhap News Agency, Unification Minister Kim Yung-ho made these remarks during his welcome speech at an opinion leaders' discussion held at Yonsei University in Seoul. The event took place about a week after Trump's election for his second presidential term, marked by his "America First" vision for foreign affairs. Kim stressed that despite a change in political leadership, the robust South Korea-U.S. alliance, which has lasted for 71 years, will not falter. This alliance is based on shared core values such as freedom and human rights, and both nations are working towards common goals of peace and prosperity, which will further strengthen their partnership. Additionally, Kim highlighted that the trilateral partnership involving Japan, which was established during the Camp David summit in August 2023 among the leaders of the three nations, will remain strong under Trump's second term. He described it as a "cornerstone" for Korean unification and regional peace. The minister also committed to working more diligently towards Korean unification. He emphasized the importance of seeking support and solidarity from the international community for a democracy-based, free unification.
