U.S. Voices Support for South Korean Constitutional Efforts Amid President’s Warrant Issuance

Seoul: The United States on Saturday reiterated its "firm" support for the South Korean people and expressed appreciation for the country's efforts to uphold its Constitution. This statement came shortly after a Seoul court issued a warrant to detain President Yoon Suk Yeol following his unsuccessful attempt at martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, a spokesperson from the U.S. State Department released a statement emphasizing the enduring strength of the alliance between Seoul and Washington, as well as the U.S.'s security commitment to South Korea. The spokesperson highlighted the United States' support for the Korean people and acknowledged South Korea's dedication to the rule of law and constitutional adherence.

The spokesperson further stated, "The United States remains committed to working with Acting President Choi and the ROK Government. We are confident in the democratic resilience of the ROK and the Korean people."

The warrant, issued by a judge at the Seoul Western District Court, cited potential risks of evidence destruction. It charged President Yoon with leading an insurrection and abusing power by declaring martial law on December 3 and allegedly deploying troops to the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from overturning the decree.
