Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has announced the expansion of 50 percent tariffs to include 407 more product categories containing steel and aluminum. These "derivative" products will now be subject to the same tariff rate as other steel and aluminum imports.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security has listed new products such as wind turbines, mobile cranes, bulldozers, railcars, furniture, compressors, and pumps among those affected. The bureau confirmed that the steel and aluminum content of these products will incur a 50 percent duty rate.
The tariffs are part of measures imposed by Washington under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, a law that allows the president to adjust imports deemed a threat to national security. Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey Kessler stated that the expansion aims to prevent circumvention of the tariffs, thereby supporting the revitalization of the domestic steel and aluminum industries.
The tariff expansion is anticipated to impact South Korea's industry significantly. The Korea International Trade Association noted that last year, the U.S. imported $11.89 billion worth of these newly added derivative products from South Korea.
