Washington: U.S. authorities have apprehended a South Korean national previously convicted of possessing or controlling material depicting minors in sexually explicit conduct, as part of a broader national immigration enforcement effort, the White House announced Friday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the arrest was carried out by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a federal agency under the Department of Homeland Security, which has been at the forefront of the immigration crackdown. During a press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt disclosed that ICE Atlanta executed the arrest on January 28, 2025. The individual had been convicted on nine counts related to the possession or control of such illicit material.

The White House further communicated through its account on X that the South Korean national has been sentenced to five years in prison, followed by 20 years of probation. This arrest is part of a larger initiative that began after the Trump administration assumed office on January 20, with a strong focus on curbing illegal immigration and enhancing border security.
