Yoon’s Legal Team Seeks Recusal of Three Justices in Impeachment Case

Seoul: President Yoon Suk Yeol's legal team announced that it has formally requested the Constitutional Court to have three justices recuse themselves from his impeachment case due to concerns over impartiality. The request, submitted on Friday, targets Justice Moon Hyung-bae, Justice Lee Mi-seon, and Justice Chung Gye-seon.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the legal team highlighted potential political bias as the basis for their request. Justice Moon, currently acting as the chief justice, allegedly engaged in social media interactions with Lee Jae-myung, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, which has raised questions about his political neutrality.

Concerns were also raised regarding Justice Lee, whose brother holds a vice chairman position at the Lawyers for a Democratic Society, a group that has called for President Yoon's resignation. For Justice Chung, the team's objections stem from her husband's involvement in signing a public declaration advocating for Yoon's impeachment.

The legal team argues that these associations have already influenced the court's handling of the impeachment case. Despite these claims, many legal analysts believe that the Constitutional Court is unlikely to approve the request, as it has recently voiced concerns over attacks on its judicial independence.
