Trump Returns to White House with Renewed ‘America First’ Pledge

Washington: Donald Trump took office as the United States' 47th president on Monday, renewing his promise to "put America first" and impose tariffs on foreign countries to benefit Americans while indicating a preference to avoid military involvement in overseas conflicts.

According to Yonhap News Agency, during his swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, Trump, 78, emphasized his America First credo. His second four-year term is anticipated to bring significant shifts in the U.S.' approach to alliances, trade, and other key issues. Vice President J.D. Vance was also sworn in.

Trump's inaugural address underscored his commitment to prioritizing America, declaring the beginning of a "golden age" and asserting that America's decline is over. He pledged to build the "strongest military the world has ever seen" and expressed a desire to end wars abroad, aiming to be remembered as a peacemaker and unifier.

His America First agenda is expected to focus on reducing U.S. military involvement overseas, urging allies to share greater security responsibilities, and addressing trade deficits. Trump also announced plans to overhaul America's trade system to protect American workers and families, proposing tariffs on imports and a strategy to retake control of the Panama Canal.

The inauguration ceremony, initially planned for the West Front of the Capitol, was moved indoors due to cold temperatures. This marks the first indoor inaugural ceremony since 1985. The ceremony was attended by former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, among other dignitaries.

Trump's victory in the general election saw him win all seven battleground states, securing 312 Electoral College votes. His Republican Party holds a majority in both the House and Senate, although the margins are slim.

The ceremony highlighted Trump's political comeback and marked a new chapter in U.S. leadership as the country faces domestic and international challenges.
