Trump Claims Iran Has Given U.S. ‘Significant Prize’ in Oil and Gas Negotiations

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Iran has provided the United States with a "very significant prize" related to oil and gas. He emphasized that ongoing negotiations aim to end the conflict with the Islamic Republic.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump made these comments during the swearing-in ceremony for the new Homeland Security Secretary, Markwayne Mullin. This announcement followed his decision to delay U.S. military strikes on Iranian energy facilities, allowing more time for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping lane disrupted by the conflict.

During his remarks, Trump described the Iranian gesture as a substantial gift, though he refrained from detailing the specifics. He insisted the prize was linked to oil and gas rather than nuclear issues and mentioned active negotiations indicating progress. He expressed confidence in the current Iranian leadership, suggesting they are the right partners for these talks.

Trump also attributed a change in regime to U.S. strikes on Iran, noting a shift in leadership among Iranian officials. He highlighted the involvement of key American figures in negotiations, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jared Kushner, and Steve Witkoff, special envoy to the Middle East.

The U.S.'s diplomatic efforts occur amid rising concerns about potential economic impacts from the U.S.-Israeli war on oil prices and inflation. These economic factors are critical as they may influence voter opinions in the upcoming midterm elections, where the control of Congress is a significant concern.
