Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that peace talks with Iran are advancing at a "rapid pace" despite reports of Tehran suspending negotiations due to increased Israeli military actions in Lebanon. Trump assured that Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, have agreed not to attack each other following his discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hezbollah representatives.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump made these revelations through a series of posts on Truth Social. He emphasized the continuation of talks with Iran and described his communications with Israeli and Hezbollah officials as productive, with both sides agreeing to cease hostilities.
Earlier, reports from The Washington Post and other media outlets indicated that Tehran had halted negotiations with Washington as a response to Israeli strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, complicating the ongoing efforts to establish peace in the Middle East.
In a separate message, Trump detailed his conversation with Netanyahu, noting that any troops en route to Beirut had been called back, and emphasized a reciprocal agreement with Hezbollah to cease all attacks.
The suspension of talks coincided with renewed regional tensions, marked by U.S. military actions against Iranian targets over the weekend and retaliatory missile attacks by Iran on U.S. forces stationed in Kuwait.
In an interview with NBC News, Trump expressed his indifference towards the suspension, suggesting that ongoing dialogues are not imperative. He also indicated that despite heightened expectations last week for a potential memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Washington and Tehran, the negotiations faced hurdles after he proposed stricter conditions.
The proposed MOU aimed to extend a ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and address Iran's nuclear program in future discussions. However, Trump's revised terms demanded Iran's commitment to non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and other concessions, leading to a reassessment from Tehran.
In additional posts, Trump reiterated his commitment to securing a favorable deal for the U.S. and criticized political opponents for undermining the negotiation process. He assured that the situation would resolve positively, urging patience and confidence in the outcome.
