Trump and Xi Highlight Cooperation Amid Key Summit Discussions

Washington:U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping underscored their friendship, shared interests, and the importance of cooperation during a summit in Washington. The meeting aimed to address critical issues such as artificial intelligence (AI), trade, and security.

According to Yonhap News Agency, both leaders delivered remarks at a White House welcome ceremony, emphasizing the need for strategic stability in their bilateral ties. They recalled their nations' cooperation during World War II as a foundation for navigating current geopolitical differences.

The summit was significant for both leaders, with Trump seeking stable relations ahead of the November midterm elections, while Xi aimed for positive outcomes before a major political gathering in China. Trump expressed confidence in achieving shared goals, citing the historical connection between the U.S. and China and the progress made on trade and other issues through cooperation.

AI, technology, and security were key topics, with Trump referring to AI as "superintelligence" and stressing the long-term impact of current decisions in these areas. Xi highlighted the importance of strong bilateral communication and joint efforts for peaceful coexistence, expressing willingness to work with Trump toward a steady future for their relationship.

Xi called for ongoing dialogue to foster understanding and build mutual trust, emphasizing the intertwined interests of both countries and the potential for cooperation to address global challenges. He noted that both nations have a responsibility to develop AI for the well-being of people.

During the summit, Taiwan was also a crucial topic. Xi expressed hope for the U.S. to oppose "Taiwan independence" and handle the issue prudently to strengthen bilateral strategic cooperation.

The summit marked the third in-person meeting between the leaders since Trump's return to office, following previous discussions in South Korea and China. The leaders plan further engagements at upcoming multilateral gatherings later this year.
