Trump and Xi Discuss Divergent Views on AI Guardrails at White House Summit

Washington:U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping displayed differing perspectives on the issue of artificial intelligence (AI) guardrails during their summit in Washington on Thursday, even as they emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation.

According to Yonhap News Agency, during the welcome ceremony at the White House, Xi Jinping emphasized that AI should remain "under human control," highlighting the need for responsible development and management. In contrast, President Trump dismissed the need for additional AI guardrails, labeling concerns about AI safety as a "hoax."

The summit between the leaders of these two superpowers occurred amid ongoing debates in the United States regarding the rapid advancement of AI technology. There are rising concerns that AI could potentially exceed human control, leading to security and other risks.

Xi Jinping stated that both China and the United States are at the forefront of AI development. He underscored their shared capability and responsibility to ensure AI development serves the well-being of people and remains under human oversight.

Prior to the meeting, Trump referred to AI as "superintelligence" on Truth Social, identifying it as a significant summit topic. He argued that the U.S. Department of Justice acts as the American guardrail for AI, aligning with what he claimed to be China's position on the topic.

In a recent address to the U.N. General Assembly, Trump asserted that the U.S. rejects any global attempts to regulate AI, expressing his commitment to not hinder AI growth, which he predicted would surpass the industrial revolution in impact.

Reports have indicated that the Trump administration proposed a "notification mechanism" for bilateral communication to address and discuss dangerous AI events with potential security implications.
