Trade Minister Urges Resolution to Escalating Trade Tensions Between Seoul and Washington

Washington: Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo has communicated South Korea's dedication to maintaining its tariff agreement with the United States to officials in Washington, emphasizing the need for a "mutually beneficial" solution to the rising trade tensions between the two nations. This follows U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to increase tariffs, as stated by Yeo's office.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yeo traveled to the U.S. capital last week in an effort to strengthen Seoul's position in the U.S. This visit came after Trump's unexpected announcement to impose "reciprocal" tariffs and car duties on Korea. The reason for this action was attributed to delays in the legislative process necessary to implement the bilateral trade agreement finalized in October.

During his visit, Yeo engaged with officials from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and approximately 20 U.S. lawmakers. The discussions aimed to reaffirm Seoul's commitment to passing a special bill that supports the trade deal and to tackle non-tariff issues, particularly in the realm of digital regulations, as reported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.

Yeo underscored the importance of finding a "mutually beneficial" resolution to the ongoing trade tensions during his meetings. He emphasized that an increase in tariffs could severely affect the economies and industries of both countries, according to the ministry.

In a press release, Yeo stated, "We will continue to engage in intensive consultations with the U.S. government, Congress, and industries to find a reasonable solution acceptable to both South Korea and the United States."

Yeo is scheduled to return to South Korea on Thursday.
