Seoul: Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Rick Switzer is set to visit Seoul for trade talks with South Korean Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo this week, Yeo's office announced. The discussions come as the two countries continue consultations in light of a renewed tariff hike threat by U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yeo and Switzer are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss pending trade issues, including non-tariff trade barriers. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources has not provided further details of the meeting.

The two officials previously met in Washington last week after Trump announced plans to raise "reciprocal" tariffs and auto duties on Korea back to 25 percent. This decision was attributed to delays in Korea's legislative process to implement a bilateral trade deal finalized in October.

Following his Washington visit, Yeo stated that he conveyed Seoul's commitment to passing a special bill to support its investment pledge to the United States. Efforts to address non-tariff issues related to digital regulations were also discussed.

The upcoming meeting is expected to further address non-tariff issues amid pressure from Washington regarding South Korea's digital regulations. There is also an ongoing investigation into a data leak incident involving U.S.-listed e-commerce giant Coupang.

During a trade strategy meeting, Yeo emphasized the importance of maintaining "close" communication with Washington to find a "mutually beneficial" solution to the trade issues. He also urged related ministries to manage non-tariff issues separately from U.S. tariff-related matters.
