Seoul: Top economic and financial authorities said Thursday the brief imposition of emergency martial law has had a "limited" impact on the country's financial and foreign exchange markets so far, according to the finance ministry. According to Yonhap News Agency, such assessment was made during an emergency meeting between Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok and the heads of the Bank of Korea, the Financial Services Commission, and the Financial Supervisory Service to evaluate the potential fallout from President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of the emergency martial law late Tuesday. On Wednesday, the country's benchmark stock index, the KOSPI, closed at 2,464, down 1.44 percent, or 36.1 points, from the previous session's close, after dipping to as low as 2,442.46. The Korean won also closed at 1,410.1, down 7.2 won from the previous session, partially erasing its overnight drop. "Although the financial and foreign exchange markets experienced increased volatility early in the trading session Wednesday, they l argely stabilized over time following the government's announcement of market stabilization measures," the ministry said. Participants at the meeting assessed that the impact of recent events on the financial and foreign exchange markets has been limited so far, according to the ministry. They further called for a "calm" and "measured" response, discouraging unnecessary public anxiety. Nevertheless, the authorities emphasized government readiness to act swiftly under its contingency plans to stabilize the market, citing persistent uncertainties both domestically and internationally. The authorities reiterated their commitment to deploy "unlimited liquidity" into the financial markets if needed. In addition to a 10 trillion-won (US$7 billion) stock market stabilization fund, the government plans to activate a 40 trillion-won bond market stabilization fund and corporate bond and commercial paper purchasing programs.
