Seoul:Director Hur Jin-ho's new historical thriller, "The Assassin(s)," premiered at the top of the weekend box office, attracting the largest audience during the extended Chuseok holiday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the film achieved 1,199,156 admissions over the weekend, bringing its cumulative total to 1,566,222 by Sunday, as reported by the Korean Film Council. The council's weekend chart includes ticket sales from Friday through Sunday.

The Korean thriller dominated all films screened during the four-day extended Chuseok holiday, which started on Thursday, drawing approximately 1.4 million viewers. The movie is inspired by the 1974 assassination attempt on then South Korean President Park Chung-hee, which led to the death of the first lady. It follows the investigation of the incident's mastermind, with Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il, and Lee Min-ho in leading roles. Some characters in the film suggest possible involvement by the former president or state intelligence agency, a portrayal that has sparked criticism for potential historical inaccuracies.

In second place was "Tazza: Song of Beelzebub," the final sequel in the "Tazza" crime film series, with 566,528 admissions over the weekend. The film, released on September 23, explores themes of love, hatred, and revenge between two old friends and is based on Huh Young-man's comic book series.

Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," a global hit, maintained its strong box-office presence in third place, adding 364,763 admissions and reaching a total of 11,783,000 admissions since its August 5 release.

"The Intern," a Korean remake of the 2015 Hollywood film, ranked fourth with 206,347 admissions. The remake, starring Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee, was directed by Kim Do-young and mirrors the roles originally played by Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway.

Rounding out the top five, Lee Chang-dong's "Possible Love," winner of a Venice award, garnered 72,022 admissions during its limited theatrical run, ahead of its upcoming Netflix release on November 5.
