Super Subs Propel South Korea to Early World Cup Qualification

Basra: South Korea secured an early berth for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Iraq, thanks to impactful performances from their substitutes. The match took place at Basra International Stadium in Iraq, marking another Group B win in the third round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers. South Korea now leads Group B with 19 points, three ahead of Jordan, ensuring both nations qualify as the top two seeds with one match remaining.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the game initially seemed challenging for South Korea, as Iraq's aggressive pressing left them struggling offensively. However, a turning point came when Iraqi forward Ali Al-Hamadi received a red card in the 26th minute for fouling Cho Yu-min. Despite hitting the crossbar twice in the first half, South Korea couldn't capitalize until a strategic halftime substitution made by head coach Hong Myung-bo.

Hong replaced defensive midfielder Park Yong-woo, who had a yellow card, with the more attack-minded Kim Jin-gyu. Kim's introduction energized the right side, leading to South Korea's first goal in the 63rd minute. He was set up by Lee Kang-in and expertly scored, marking his first international goal since January 2022. Kim's performance earned him the Man of the Match title, as he expressed gratitude for his teammates' support and the team's successful World Cup qualification.

Jeon Jin-woo, another impactful substitute and Kim's teammate at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, debuted for the national team in the 74th minute. Jeon, leading K League 1 with 11 goals, displayed his playmaking ability by assisting Oh Hyeon-gyu's goal in the 82nd minute. His assured play and connection with former teammate Oh sealed South Korea's victory.

Coach Hong has seen consistent success with his substitutions throughout this qualification round, as evidenced by the decisive contributions from Kim and Jeon in this crucial match.
