Special Counsel Extends Investigation into Former President Yoon’s Martial Law Attempt by 30 Days

Seoul: A special counsel team announced on Friday that it will prolong its investigation into former President Yoon Suk Yeol's unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law by an additional 30 days. This marks the second extension of the probe, which is now set to continue until November 14.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the investigation, spearheaded by special counsel Cho Eun-suk, was initially launched in June and had already been extended once. Assistant special counsel Park Ji-young disclosed the decision during a press briefing, stating that the extension was communicated to both the president and the National Assembly.

The possibility of this extension arose from recent amendments by the National Assembly to three special counsel bills targeting Yoon and his wife, Kim Keon Hee. Originally, the bills allowed special counsels to extend their investigations by 30 days at their discretion, with an additional 30-day extension requiring the president's approval. The revised bills now permit two 30-day extensions at the counsels' discretion.

With the president's endorsement, Cho's team could potentially extend the investigation until mid-December, seeking to uncover further details surrounding the former president's actions.
