Amman: South Korea were held to a 1-1 draw by Palestine on Tuesday, ending their winning streak in the Asian World Cup qualifiers at four. Captain Son Heung-min netted an equalizer for 22nd-ranked South Korea in the 16th minute, just four minutes after Palestine, ranked 100th in the world, had scored first at Amman International Stadium in Amman. The match was part of the teams' Group B competition in the third round of Asian qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to Yonhap News Agency, Son's goal marked his 51st international goal, earning him sole possession of second place on South Korea's all-time scoring list. Despite dominating ball possession, South Korea failed to score again. Due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Palestine, the home team, played at a neutral venue in the Jordanian capital. South Korea currently leads Group B with 14 points from four wins and two draws, standing six points ahead of Iraq and Jordan before the conclusion of their matches on Tuesday. South Korea had p reviously drawn goalless against Palestine on September 5 in Seoul, during the opening of the third round. This match was South Korea's last World Cup qualifying match for 2024, with the campaign set to resume in March with home matches against Oman and Jordan. The third round of qualifiers will conclude in June, with South Korea facing an away match against Iraq and a home match against Kuwait. The qualification phase consists of three groups of six teams, with the top two from each group earning spots in the 2026 World Cup. Teams finishing third and fourth will advance to the fourth round. South Korea has consistently participated in the World Cup since 1986. South Korea's head coach Hong Myung-bo fielded the same starting lineup that defeated Kuwait 3-1 last Thursday. Defenders Lee Myung-jae and Seol Young-woo started together for the fifth consecutive time, while Kim Min-jae and Cho Yu-min continued their partnership as center backs for the fourth match in a row. Hwang In-beom and Park Yong-woo resumed their roles as defensive midfielders. Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in played on the wings, supporting playmaker Lee Jae-sung, while Oh Se-hun started as the striker, having scored in each of the previous two matches. South Korea conceded the opening goal in the 12th minute following a rare mistake by Kim Min-jae. Kim's weak back pass was intercepted by Zeid Qunbar, who slipped the ball past goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo to give Palestine a 1-0 lead. South Korea quickly responded with Son scoring his milestone goal through adept triangle passing. Lee Myung-jae passed to Lee Jae-sung, who made a one-touch pass to Son, allowing him to score from a challenging angle.
