South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to Lift Emergency Martial Law Amid Political Turmoil.

Seoul: South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced on Wednesday his intention to lift the emergency martial law that he had declared just hours prior, attributing his initial decision to what he described as "anti-state" activities by the nation's opposition, which he accused of crippling his administration. According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon addressed the nation in a televised statement, revealing that he had convened a Cabinet meeting to discuss and finalize the lifting of martial law. He assured the public that once the necessary quorum is achieved during the meeting, the martial law would be rescinded. Yoon explained that the martial law was declared at 11 p.m. the previous night as a measure to protect the nation against forces he believed were threatening the constitutional order and the nation's democratic functions. In response to demands from the National Assembly for the cessation of martial law, President Yoon has already ordered the withdrawal of troops that were deployed to enforce the ma rtial law directives. His announcement comes amidst ongoing tensions with the opposition, whom he accuses of impeding the government through actions such as attempts to impeach officials. The declaration of martial law had significant repercussions, both domestically and internationally. U.S. officials expressed "grave concern" over the situation, emphasizing the importance of resolving political disputes in South Korea through peaceful means. The move by President Yoon highlights the intense political climate in South Korea and the challenges faced by its leadership in maintaining democratic processes.
