Seoul: Two more South Korean nationals were rescued in Cambodia's crackdown on online scams, and approximately 10 more have been arrested, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun announced Monday. This follows the return of over 60 Korean nationals linked to crimes in the Southeast Asian country.

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea is intensifying its efforts to combat organized crime targeting its citizens. This move comes after the death of a South Korean college student, who was allegedly killed by an online job scam ring, caused public outrage. Cambodian authorities apprehended around 10 South Koreans suspected of involvement in the crime during their crackdown last Thursday. On the same day, two other Koreans, believed to be victims, were rescued and are expected to be repatriated this week.

Foreign Minister Cho stated that the foreign ministry plans to hire 40 additional consular personnel to better address incidents similar to the online scams in Cambodia. The ministry is also planning to dispatch consular officials from South Korean diplomatic missions in neighboring countries to work on a rotational basis, aiming to manage the increased workload related to the crime.

Furthermore, the ministry intends to implement an "early warning system" for the Southeast Asian region to ensure faster and more efficient consular access for Korean nationals in urgent need of assistance, as mentioned by Cho.
