Sihanoukville: A South Korean man in his 50s was discovered dead in a hotel room in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, this week, as reported by the foreign ministry on Tuesday. His body was located around 8 p.m. on Monday (local time), with local police notifying the South Korean Embassy through a leader in the Korean community, the ministry stated in a press release.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean community leader was tasked with checking the site, where he found the man's passport, a note believed to be written by him, and a cellphone. In response, the embassy dispatched a consular official to the scene to assist in the investigation.

This incident occurs amidst a series of abuse cases involving South Koreans who have been lured to Cambodia to work for online scam operations. The South Korean government has been intensifying efforts to combat this crime and repatriate nationals involved. However, authorities have reportedly ruled out any connection between this latest death and the online scams.

Cambodian police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Meanwhile, the foreign ministry has pledged to provide prompt consular assistance to the man's family, including support for funeral and other related arrangements.
