South Korea Nominates Veteran Bureaucrat Hwang Jong-woo as Oceans Minister

Seoul: South Korea has announced the nomination of Hwang Jong-woo, a seasoned expert in maritime affairs, as the new oceans minister. Hwang, 59, brings to the role decades of experience in maritime policymaking, a key factor in his nomination by the government on Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Hwang currently chairs the Korea Maritime Cooperation Center's international cooperation committee. His career is marked by senior positions at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, where he was responsible for overseeing policy affairs related to maritime and port activities. This nomination follows the resignation of former Oceans Minister Chun Jae-soo, who stepped down 81 days ago amid allegations of accepting bribes from the Unification Church.

In a written statement, Hwang expressed a profound sense of responsibility, being the first ministerial nominee since the ministry's relocation to Busan, approximately 400 kilometers southeast of Seoul. He acknowledged the challenges posed by global uncertainties and stated, "I will faithfully prepare for the confirmation hearing despite my shortcomings."

Hwang's academic credentials include a bachelor's degree in law and a master's degree from Seoul National University's Graduate School of Public Administration, underscoring his extensive educational background suitable for the role.
