Tokoname:Nagoya South Korea secured the silver medal in the women's epee team fencing event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, unable to retain their Asiad title after a defeat to China.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean team, comprising Song Se-ra, Lim Tae-hee, Yang Seung-hye, and Lee Hye-in, faced a 45-28 loss against China in the gold medal match held at Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, Japan. South Korea, which previously won the event at the Hangzhou Asian Games, finished as runners-up this time.
Song Se-ra, who had earlier claimed the individual epee title, contributed to the team's silver medal achievement. Meanwhile, Singapore and Kazakhstan both took home bronze medals in the event.
The team fencing competition involves nine head-to-head bouts, each lasting three minutes or until one team scores a multiple of five points, with 45 points required to secure victory. South Korea initially led 7-6 after the first two bouts, but China gained a 15-13 advantage in the third bout and maintained it through the ninth.
Song reflected on the match, noting the team's mistakes due to nerves and their familiarity with the Chinese team's techniques. Despite the defeat, she expressed determination to improve and excel in future competitions, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
In other fencing events, the South Korean men's foil team, consisting of Youn Jeong-hyun, Lee Kwang-hyun, Kim Tae-hwan, and Im Cheol-woo, earned a bronze medal after losing 45-41 to Hong Kong in the semifinals. South Korea had previously secured the foil team title at the 2018 and 2022 Asian Games.
