Seoul: South Korea and Britain have initiated a new science technology committee to explore ways to enhance bilateral cooperation across fields such as biology and semiconductors, as reported by Seoul's science ministry. According to Yonhap News Agency, the inaugural session of the South Korea-Britain Mixed Committee on Science and Technology was held in Seoul. This event follows the Downing Street Accord, signed by President Yoon Suk Yeol and former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during their summit last year. The accord is designed to bolster collaboration between the two nations in various sectors, including security, defense, science, and technology. The meeting was attended by approximately 40 science officials from both countries, including First Vice Science Minister Lee Chang-yune and Angela McLean, the British government's chief scientific adviser. The newly formed committee is set to consolidate the roles of three separate committees previously responsible for science cooperation between South Korea and Britain in the science, health, and industry ministries. During the discussions, representatives from Seoul and London explored strategies to enhance cooperation in technologies poised to drive economic growth, such as synthetic biology, nuclear fusion, quantum physics, semiconductors, clean energy, and bio health. The collaboration will involve operating a joint research center for synthetic biology, co-developing essential nuclear fusion technologies, and initiating new joint research projects in bio health. The next meeting of the mixed committee is scheduled to take place in Britain in 2026. "Starting with the first mixed committee meeting, researchers from both countries will be able to communicate more actively and conduct joint research projects," Lee stated.
