Milan: All six South Korean short track speed skaters in action progressed to the next phases in their respective individual races on Tuesday at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
According to Yonhap News Agency, in the women's 500 meters, Kim Gil-li, Choi Min-jeong, and Lee So-yeon advanced from Tuesday's heats to the quarterfinals scheduled for Thursday. The heats featured eight groups of four skaters each. Kim and Choi secured their quarterfinal spots by finishing second in their respective groups. Lee So-yeon, finishing third in her group, advanced by recording one of the four fastest times among third-place skaters.
In the men's 1,000 meters later in the day, Rim Jong-un, Shin Dong-min, and Hwang Dae-heon also progressed by finishing second in their respective groups, securing their places in the quarterfinals set for Thursday. Additionally, Lin Xiaojun, a South Korean-born Chinese skater who previously competed as Lim Hyo-jun and won a gold and a bronze at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, also reached the quarterfinals.
This marked the opening day of short track races at the Olympic Games, with the first set of medals to be awarded later in the mixed team relay event.
