Seoul Museum of Art Hosts First Asian Solo Exhibition of Lynn Hershman Leeson

Seoul:Works by American artist Lynn Hershman Leeson, a pioneer in media art, will be showcased in her first solo exhibition in Asia at the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), as announced by the museum on Tuesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the exhibition titled "Lynn Hershman Leeson First Person Plural" is set to open on Wednesday and will feature approximately 200 pieces of Leeson's work. These include paintings, photographs, sculptures, and media installations spanning six decades of her career.

Leeson, born in 1941, is renowned for her innovative use of new technologies such as video, the internet, artificial intelligence, and genetic engineering, transforming them into artistic expressions. In the 1970s, she famously conducted a multi-year performance art project living as Roberta Breitmore, a fictional persona she invented. During the 1980s, she created the interactive work "Lorna," which allowed viewers to engage with the narrative using a remote control.

The SeMA exhibition is divided into six sections, inviting visitors to explore themes of identity expansion through social relationships, media connections, and biological changes via genetic engineering. Notably, Leeson's interactive media artworks, originally in English, like "Lorna," "Deep Contact," and "Agent Ruby," will be presented in Korean for the first time.

Additionally, the exhibition will highlight Leeson's career as a filmmaker with special screenings of her feature films in collaboration with the Seoul Art Cinema. The exhibition will be open at the Seosomun branch of SeMA until February 21.
