Seoul Mayor Commits to Housing Supply Plan Amid Rising Prices

Seoul:Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced plans to continue with the city's housing supply initiative, highlighting that construction for 15,000 units has already started this year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the city aims to initiate construction on 310,000 housing units by 2031 through redevelopment and reconstruction projects. This plan comes as a response to the recent shortages that have caused significant price increases in the housing market.

During a parliamentary audit, Mayor Oh emphasized the importance of a stable supply to address housing issues, stating that the city has accelerated improvement projects using rapid integrated planning. He also mentioned that efforts will be made to reduce on-site challenges and unfair regulations to ensure continuous housing supply.

Additionally, Mayor Oh committed to addressing rental housing shortages by expanding the private housing supply foundation.

In the same session, Mayor Oh expressed his disagreement with the central government's proposal to use Yongsan Park for housing development. He argued that such a plan would contravene a special law safeguarding the park's primary site from alternative use. A city survey indicated that nearly half of Seoul's residents are strongly opposed to this development.

Yongsan Park, occupying land previously part of a U.S. military base, covers about 3 million square meters. Mayor Oh pointed out that soil contamination issues could delay any potential development until after President Lee Jae Myung's term, as purification could take up to seven years.
