President Lee Urges Constitutional Reform to Honor Democratization Movements

Seoul:President Lee Jae Myung on Friday urged the National Assembly to advocate for constitutional revision, emphasizing the importance of incorporating the spirit of South Korea's democratization movements into the Constitution.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee made this appeal during a speech commemorating the 47th anniversary of the 1979 Busan-Masan pro-democracy protests, also known as the Buma uprising, which opposed the dictatorship of then President Park Chung-hee.

President Lee highlighted the significance of reflecting both the Buma uprising and the Gwangju democratization movement in the Constitution's preamble, describing it as a necessary step to remember the sacrifices made in defense of South Korea's democracy and people's sovereignty. He called upon the National Assembly to initiate public consultations and engage in informed discussions on constitutional reform.
