Seoul: The Seoul High Court announced plans to establish dedicated trial divisions to manage insurrection and other nationally significant cases, such as the one involving former President Yoon Suk Yeol. The appeals court intends to convene a meeting of all judges on Monday to discuss augmenting its criminal divisions by two or three to accommodate this initiative.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this announcement follows the recent unveiling of new judicial rules by the Supreme Court. These rules propose the formation of a dedicated tribunal to oversee charges of insurrection, treason, and mutiny. This development emerges amidst the ruling Democratic Party's efforts to establish a special bench for insurrection cases linked to Yoon's martial law imposition.

If the proposal is ratified, the Seoul High Court will expand to 16 criminal divisions by next year, with two or three specifically designated for insurrection and other critical national cases. The court plans to finalize the exact number of dedicated trial divisions, as well as the formation procedures and timeline, through a comprehensive meeting of all judges.

Yoon, alongside several former government officials, including ex-Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, faces trial on insurrection charges related to their involvement in the former president's unsuccessful martial law attempt.
