Seoul: The ruling Democratic Party (DP) has openly criticized the Supreme Court's recent decision to form its own dedicated panel for handling insurrection and treason charges. The party has vowed to proceed with its plan to introduce a bill next week to establish a special tribunal specifically for insurrection cases related to former President Yoon Suk Yeol's unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the National Court Administration under the Supreme Court announced on Thursday that it would create internal guidelines for a new tribunal. This tribunal is intended to address cases of insurrection, treason, and rebellion under military law that have significant political, economic, and social implications. The court emphasized that these guidelines aim to ensure swift and fair proceedings in such high-stakes cases.

Despite this development, DP leader Jung Chung-rae has stated that the party will continue efforts to pass the DP-led bill within the year. Jung accused Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae of intentionally delaying trials for those involved in the martial law case. During a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly, Jung expressed his disapproval of the judiciary, accusing it of deceiving the public and lacking genuine resolve to address the martial law crisis, only to later feign action on the issue.

The DP's pursuit of the bill continues amidst criticism that it may be unconstitutional and could compromise the independence of the judicial system. The party intends to present the bill at a parliamentary plenary session next Tuesday, with a vote anticipated the following day.

The ongoing trials involve Yoon and several former government officials, including former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who face insurrection charges related to their roles in the failed martial law attempt.
