Seoul and Washington Strike Landmark US$450 Billion Deal to Cap U.S. Tariffs at 15%

Seoul: In a significant development, South Korea and the United States have reached an agreement on a trade deal valued at US$450 billion, which includes capping U.S. tariffs at 15%. This agreement marks a pivotal moment in the economic relationship between the two countries.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the deal was struck after extensive negotiations and is expected to ease economic uncertainty between Seoul and Washington. The agreement, which aims to bolster trade relations, comes at a crucial time as both nations seek to stabilize and strengthen their economies.

The newly signed agreement is part of a broader strategy known as the 'MASGA' plan, which is designed to revitalize U.S. shipbuilding. This initiative underscores the strategic importance both countries place on enhancing trade ties while addressing specific industry needs.

The deal also highlights the commitment of both nations to work collaboratively on economic issues. The agreement includes a provision to maintain the current status of rice and beef markets, ensuring no further opening, which has been a sensitive topic in previous trade discussions.

A summit between South Korean President Lee and U.S. President Trump is anticipated within the next two weeks, where further discussions on the trade agreement and other bilateral issues are expected to take place. This summit is set to solidify the newly established trade terms and explore additional areas of cooperation.
