Senior U.S. Diplomat Cites Korea Zinc’s Multibillion-Dollar Investment

Washington: U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau on Friday highlighted a South Korean company's investment in the United States as a key example of investment pledges made under the Donald Trump administration. In a post on the social media platform X, Landau pointed to Korea Zinc Co., the world's largest refined zinc smelter, and its multibillion-dollar project in Tennessee.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Landau detailed that Korea Zinc is investing $6.6 billion in a new metals refinery in Clarksville, Tennessee. The project will include a nearly 7-million-square-foot integrated smelter, processing 1.1 million tons of ore into zinc each year using advanced technology.

The diplomat noted that the project is expected to create 420 new jobs in Clarksville. Additionally, it is anticipated to provide a boost to local construction companies and suppliers. Korea Zinc plans to build the nonferrous metal smelter in Clarksville and commence production of 11 critical minerals starting in 2029.
