Senior Aides Resign After Acting President Appoints Constitutional Court Justices

SEOUL: Senior aides to the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol have tendered their resignations, following the appointment of two new justices to the Constitutional Court by Acting President Choi Sang-mok. This move comes amidst political tensions and demands from the opposition to address vacancies on the court's bench.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the resignations include key figures such as Chung Jin-suk, the presidential chief of staff; Shin Won-sik, the National Security Adviser; Sung Tae-yoon, the chief of staff for policy; and Chang Ho-jin, Yoon's foreign policy adviser. The decision to resign was made public on Wednesday, a day after Acting President Choi took steps to partially fulfill the opposition's demands by filling two of the three vacant positions on the nine-member Constitutional Court.

The appointments by Choi have sparked controversy, as the presidential office expressed regret, stating that Choi exceeded his authority as an interim leader. The appointments are seen as a pivotal move ahead of a crucial ruling on President Yoon's impeachment, with the court now closer to its full capacity. The political landscape remains tense, as the nation anticipates the court's impending decision on the impeachment proceedings.
