Samsung Display’s New Foldable OLED Panel Passes 500,000-Fold Durability Test

Seoul: Samsung Display Co. announced that its latest foldable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel has successfully completed a 500,000-fold durability test, highlighting the company's progress in flexible display technology. The panel is featured in Samsung Electronics Co.'s new Galaxy Z Fold 7 smartphone and remained fully operational after enduring 500,000 folds over a 13-day period at a temperature of 25 C, as confirmed by global certification agency Bureau Veritas.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the achievement more than doubles Samsung Display's previous internal durability standard of 200,000 folds, showcasing the company's confidence in the longevity of its foldable OLED technology. The company stated that the 500,000-fold benchmark signifies over 10 years of usage for average consumers and more than six years for users who fold their devices over 200 times daily.

Samsung Display attributed the improved durability to a newly developed shock-resistant structure inspired by bulletproof glass. The company increased the thickness of its Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) cover by 50 percent and introduced a new high-elastic adhesive, enhancing impact recovery performance fourfold compared to earlier materials.

"This new panel not only builds consumer confidence in foldable OLED durability but also underscores the technological advantage that makes Samsung Display distinguished in the industry," said Lee Ho-jung, head of the mobile display product planning team at Samsung Display.
