S. Korean Won Slightly Weakens Due to Foreign Selling of Local Stocks

Seoul: The South Korean won weakened slightly against the U.S. dollar Monday, as overseas investors remained net sellers of local stocks. The won was quoted at 1,418.4 won per dollar at 3:30 p.m., marking a decrease of 2.3 won from the close of stock trading last Friday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the won rose to as high as 1,407.3 won in intraday trading, but gains were pared as exporters appeared to buy the dollar for profit-taking. Additionally, the dollar remained weak following last week's U.S. employment data, which dampened prospects for a rate hike by the Federal Reserve next month.

Foreign investors sold a net 1.4 trillion won (US$990 million) worth of local stocks during the latest trading session. Despite the foreign selling, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index rose by 0.65 percent to close at 6,299.66.
