S. Korea Falls to Brazil in 5-0 Defeat in Seoul

Seoul: The Taegeuk Warriors faced a significant setback as they suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat against Brazil in their recent men's friendly football match held in Seoul. Estevao and Rodrygo each netted two goals, while Vinicius Junior added another for Brazil, currently ranked sixth in the world.

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea, ranked 23rd, had entered this match following promising performances against top-20 teams, having secured a 2-0 victory over the United States and drawing 2-2 against Mexico last month. Head coach Hong Myung-bo viewed the match as a pivotal moment to assess his team's standing against the perennial World Cup contenders. On Thursday, he expressed confidence in his players' strong form and readiness to perform.

However, the South Korean team failed to meet their coach's expectations, struggling significantly in front of approximately 63,000 fans at Seoul World Cup Stadium. Hong has been experimenting with a back-three formation in recent matches, and facing Brazil was the most formidable test yet. The strategy aimed to leverage the reliability of three center backs and outnumber opposing attackers with two wingbacks.

Despite the tactical plan, South Korea was unable to cope with Brazil's superior speed and skill. Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae started as one of the center backs alongside the less experienced Kim Ju-sung and Cho Yu-min, while Lee Tae-seok and Seol Young-woo attempted to support defensively. Estevao's opening goal in the 13th minute, following a seamless passing play, exposed weaknesses in the South Korean defense.

Brazil capitalized on their quick transitions and precision in the attacking third, exemplified by Rodrygo's goal in the 41st minute, which highlighted the skill gap between the teams. South Korea's defensive lapses continued, leading to two more goals early in the second half, as Kim Min-jae's error allowed Estevao to score, followed by another miscue resulting in a goal for Rodrygo.

Vinicius Junior completed the scoring with a solo effort, outmaneuvering goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo. While Kim Min-jae's mistake was notable, the entire backline had an off day, with Lee Tae-seok and Seol Young-woo particularly struggling defensively. Despite the heavy defeat, the match raised critical questions for South Korea's team as they look to regroup and address their weaknesses.
