Washington: South Korea and the United States have initiated discussions to determine a date for a summit between President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Seoul's top diplomat. This announcement follows President Trump's statement that President Lee would visit the White House in two weeks.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun made these remarks during a meeting with South Korean correspondents in Washington. This meeting occurred after Cho and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held their first discussions following the inception of the Lee administration in June. Cho described the meeting as "very constructive."

Cho stated that both parties are coordinating to set a specific date for the summit. He also mentioned that they have agreed to work on the summit's content at a working level, implying joint preparations for the summit agenda.

A senior official from Seoul noted that it might take a bit more time to finalize a date. The official also mentioned that it is challenging to confirm whether the summit will occur in two weeks, as President Trump has indicated.

If the summit proceeds, Presidents Lee and Trump are expected to cover a wide range of alliance issues. These include defense strategies against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, as well as joint efforts to bolster economic security for both countries.
