S. Korea and African Nations to Convene in Seoul for Strategic Talks on Global Challenges

Seoul: Foreign ministers from South Korea and over 50 African nations are set to gather in Seoul next week to deliberate on joint strategies for tackling global challenges and enhancing cooperation across various sectors for mutual growth, as stated by Seoul's foreign ministry on Tuesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers' Meeting, themed "Partnership for Joint Responses to Global Challenges," will take place next Monday. This marks the first time South Korea independently hosts such a ministerial meeting. The event is anticipated to feature participation from foreign ministers and delegates of 52 countries, along with leaders from four African international organizations: the African Union, the African Development Bank, the African Continental Free Trade Area, and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

In an event celebrating Africa Day, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun emphasized Africa's role as a pivotal partner amid current geopolitical tensions and supply chain issues. He highlighted Africa's significance due to its youthful demographics, rich resources, and strategic positioning, expressing hope for mutual prosperity and a sustainable future through the forthcoming discussions.

The meeting is expected to provide a platform for expanding practical cooperation between South Korea and African nations across multiple fields. This follows the inaugural Korea-Africa Summit held in June 2024. Preparations for the foreign ministers' meeting include a Senior Officials' Meeting scheduled for Sunday in Seoul and the Korea-Africa Business Forum on Tuesday. A joint statement is expected to be adopted at the conclusion of the ministerial meeting.
