Seoul: The ruling People Power Party (PPP) has urged an immediate overhaul of espionage laws to extend the prohibition of spying activities beyond "enemy countries" to include all "foreign countries." This call for legislative revision was made by PPP leader Han Dong-hoon during a Supreme Council meeting. The appeal follows the recent detention of a South Korean national in China on espionage charges while employed by a Chinese chipmaker. According to Yonhap News Agency, Han emphasized the current limitation of the espionage law, which only applies to North Korea. He pointed out that a Chinese national suspected of leaking South Korea's semiconductor technology cannot be penalized under the existing law. Han also mentioned that the Democratic Party, which holds a majority in the National Assembly, is not opposed to revising the law and urged them to expedite the legislative process. The PPP's push for a revision of the espionage law has been ongoing for months, driven by concerns over cases such as that of a South Korean military intelligence official indicted in August for allegedly selling military secrets to China. Additionally, in July, a Korean American foreign policy expert faced charges in the U.S. for allegedly acting as an unregistered agent for the South Korean government.
