Seoul: The ruling Democratic Party (DP) has put forward three candidates to serve as special prosecutors to investigate former President Yoon Suk Yeol, addressing serious allegations related to his tenure. These include a failed martial law attempt, corruption accusations involving his wife, and the mysterious death of a Marine.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the presidential office had previously called on the DP and the minor Rebuilding Korea Party to nominate candidates for each investigation following the passage of three significant bills. The DP has suggested Cho Eun-suk, a former acting chief of the Board of Audit and Inspection, to handle the investigation into 11 charges against Yoon. These involve allegations of insurrection and military mutiny linked to his unsuccessful martial law bid in December.
In addition, Min Joong-ki, who previously served as the chief judge of the Seoul Central District Court, has been named to investigate Yoon's wife, Kim Keon Hee. The charges here involve accusations of stock price manipulation, acceptance of luxury items, and interference in the election nomination process. The DP also recommended Lee Yoon-jae, a professor at Myongji University, to explore the circumstances surrounding the Marine's death in July 2023.
The Rebuilding Korea Party has also submitted its list of nominees. President Lee Jae-myung now faces the task of appointing the special counsels within three days of receiving these recommendations. Once appointed, the special counsels will have a preparation period of up to 20 days, with comprehensive investigations anticipated to commence early next month.
