Seoul: The National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee adopted a resolution honoring former U.S. Congressman Charles Rangel for his contributions during the Korean War and his efforts to strengthen the alliance between South Korea and the United States.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the resolution was supported by 69 lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties, acknowledging Rangel's efforts in bolstering the alliance and promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula. The National Assembly expressed respect for Rangel's dedication to defending South Korea's freedom during North Korea's invasion on June 25, 1950.
The resolution also conveyed condolences over Rangel's death and emphasized the commitment to uphold the values and spirit of the alliance he championed. Throughout his congressional career, Rangel played a significant role in legislative efforts concerning Korea-related issues, including promoting peace and reunification, supporting reunions of divided Korean American families, and advocating for Korean War veterans. He was also known for supporting the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement.
Rangel passed away in New York on May 26.
