Seoul: Ruling party chief Han Dong-hoon on Tuesday suggested the need to revise a civilian nuclear pact between South Korea and the United States to allow Seoul to acquire nuclear reprocessing and enrichment technology. Han of the People Power Party (PPP) made the remark during a forum organized by the Yeouido Institute, a PPP think tank, to discuss ways to strengthen the South Korea-U.S. alliance under the incoming administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. According to Yonhap News Agency, Han emphasized the importance of preparing for a potential revision to the South Korea-U.S. nuclear energy accord. He stated that the government should consider flexibly including the acquisition of enrichment and reprocessing technology, if necessary. This bilateral agreement was initially signed in 1974 to ensure that South Korea's nuclear power usage did not pose proliferation risks and was later revised in 2015. Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the ruling People Power Party, delivered his congratulatory remarks at the forum organized by the Yeouido Institute in Seoul. The event focused on discussing strategies to enhance the alliance between South Korea and the United States under the new U.S. administration.
