Rubio Reports ‘Some Progress’ in Iran Talks, But Resolution Remains Elusive

Helsingborg: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday acknowledged "some progress" in ongoing peace negotiations with Iran, but emphasized that the two sides have not yet reached a resolution. This statement coincides with the efforts of Pakistan's top military officer, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who has arrived in Tehran aiming to mediate and help bring an end to the conflict in the Middle East.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Rubio shared his insights during a press briefing following a North Atlantic Treaty Organization ministerial meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden. He remarked on the progress without overstating or understating its significance, noting that more work remains to be done. "There's more work to be done, but look ... there's been some, and that's a good sign ... We're not there yet. I hope we get there. The president would prefer to do a good deal," Rubio stated, as per a transcript released by the State Department.

Rubio did not provide specific details about the advancements made between Washington and Tehran. The ongoing discussions focus on resolving key issues, such as the U.S. demand for Iran to pledge not to develop nuclear weapons and to transfer its enriched uranium stockpile to the United States.

The diplomatic efforts come in the wake of President Trump's announcement on Monday to delay a planned attack on Iran, which was set for Tuesday. He cautioned that the U.S. stands ready to proceed with a "full, large-scale" military response if a satisfactory agreement is not achieved that aligns with the interests of the U.S. and its Middle Eastern allies.
