Washington: Battle tanks and armored vehicles paraded down a major downtown street in Washington, with military aircraft flying overhead, during a rare event marking the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary. The parade coincided with President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday and featured approximately 6,700 troops in both historic and modern uniforms.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the parade proceeded despite criticism over its estimated cost of up to $45 million, concerns about the weather, and comparisons to North Korean military displays. President Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and other officials watched from a viewing stand on Constitution Avenue. Trump saluted the troops and described the U.S. Army as a formidable force that safeguards freedom.
The event highlighted various military demonstrations and displays of combat hardware, intended to showcase the history of the U.S. Army, which predates the U.S. Declaration of Independence by a year. The parade featured around 150 vehicles, including M1A2 Abrams tanks, and over 50 military aircraft, as well as horses, mules, and a dog.
During the event, an announcer provided historical context on the Korean War, emphasizing the sacrifices made by American troops to defend democracy. Tens of thousands of spectators, some waving American flags, gathered to pay their respects, while sporadic protests occurred in nearby areas.
The parade, reportedly orchestrated according to President Trump’s vision, was notable as the last major military event of its kind in Washington occurred in 1991 after the first Gulf War ended. Preparations faced criticism, even from within the Republican Party, with some likening the parade to North Korean displays.
Security measures were heightened, with strict screening processes for attendees entering the parade site.
