Presidential Office Convenes Meeting with Major Firms Over Won’s Decline

Seoul: The presidential office is set to hold a meeting on Thursday with top executives from seven major South Korean companies, including Samsung and Hyundai Motor, to deliberate on strategies to counteract the depreciating trend of the South Korean won.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Yong-beom, the presidential chief of staff for policy, will engage with senior officials from Samsung, SK, Hyundai Motor, LG, Lotte, Hanwha, and HD Hyundai. The meeting aims to evaluate the current exchange market conditions and formulate responses to the ongoing depreciation. Recent data indicates that the Korean won has sharply declined against the U.S. dollar, closing at 1,479.80 on Wednesday, marking its lowest point since April.

Kim is anticipated to gather insights from these companies regarding the challenges they face amid the growing market volatility resulting from the won's weakening position. The participating firms are expected to seek governmental intervention to stabilize currency fluctuations and mitigate potential negative impacts on corporate operations.
