According to Yonhap News Agency, President Yoon's comment marks a departure from his previous focus on strengthening alliances primarily with the United States and Japan, especially following the normalization of relations between Seoul and Tokyo in March. This change in stance may have been influenced by Yoon's recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the APEC summit in Peru. During their discussions, Yoon urged Xi to play a constructive role in mitigating the growing military ties between North Korea and Russia, which had caused concern given North Korea's military support to R ussia. Xi reportedly expressed a desire for reduced tensions on the Korean Peninsula, and the meeting ended on a positive note.
