President Lee Honors Fallen Firefighter in Bucheon Factory Fire

Bucheon:President Lee Jae Myung paid tribute on Saturday to a firefighter who lost his life while combating a factory fire in Bucheon, located west of Seoul. The presidential office announced that the firefighter, Kim Jin-seok, was posthumously awarded the Okjo Order of Service Merit in recognition of his service and sacrifice. President Lee extended his condolences to Kim's bereaved family.

According to Yonhap News Agency, President Lee emphasized the importance of providing recognition and support to firefighters commensurate with their dedication and sacrifice. He also highlighted the need to enhance on-site safety measures to ensure safer working conditions for firefighters.

During the visit, President Lee instructed Interior Minister Yoon Ho-jung to ensure all necessary support is provided for the treatment and recovery of the firefighters injured in the incident. The government has also announced plans to give further honors to Kim, including arrangements for his burial at a national cemetery.

The fire erupted at a four-story metalworking factory at 838 a.m. on Friday and was fully extinguished by 1106 a.m., as reported by fire authorities. Kim was among the first responders to the scene but succumbed to his injuries at 1255 a.m. on Saturday. In addition to Kim's tragic death, seven other firefighters sustained injuries during the fire.

Authorities have suggested that the fire may have been caused by the ignition of an oil mist during a metal-cleaning operation at the factory.
