Seoul: The People Power Party (PPP) is poised to narrow down its list of contenders to four for the upcoming June presidential election, marking the first phase of its primary process, which relies on public polling.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the results will be determined by surveys conducted by five polling agencies over Monday and Tuesday, involving a combined total of 4,000 respondents. The party's election commission plans to announce the top four contenders by 7 p.m. In the subsequent round, two candidates will be selected through a process that equally weighs party member votes and public opinion polling, with the final candidate to be confirmed on May 3.

A recent Realmeter poll indicates that Rep. Lee Jae-myung, the former leader of the Democratic Party (DP), maintains a significant lead with 50.2 percent support. Former Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo, now with the PPP, follows with 12.2 percent. Other contenders include former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon with 8.5 percent, former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo with 7.5 percent, and PPP Rep. Na Kyung-won at 2 percent.

The presidential election is set for June 3, following the ousting of former President Yoon Suk Yeol on April 4 due to his failed attempt at martial law. Despite intensified political attacks from conservative contenders, the PPP appears unsettled by Lee's commanding lead in opinion polls.

A proposal to establish a new political party supporting Yoon has been temporarily shelved. Rep. Lee Yang-soo of the PPP expressed on SBS radio that pursuing such a plan could negatively affect the party amid the presidential election.
